MSHFM Board Meeting Minutes
August 17, 2000

University Hospital & Clinics

MSHFM President Don Stevens called the meeting to order at 10 a.m. Minutes from the May 11 meeting were approved.

The treasurer reported total assets for:

  • June $9,847.22

  • July $9,568.98

Our Chapter’s first gold medal was viewed by all. Thanks again to everyone involved.

The Missouri Hospital Association Convention and Trade Show is November 8-10 at Tan-Tar-A Resort at Osage Beach. The schedule was distributed and reviewed by all. November 8 at 3:30 p.m. will be MSHFM’s board meeting. 10:45-11 a.m. Thursday, November 9, will be the MSHFM General Business meeting to elect officers. We will also have speakers for the morning and afternoon programs. See your schedule for more details.

We will vote on the proposed revisions to the MSHFM Bylaws at the Tan-Tan-A meeting.

We still need candidates for the position of MSHFM President-elect. If anyone is interested, please contact Don Stevens at 573/882-3639.

Toby Gilk reminded the group to contact Dot Thompson at 573/893-3700, ext. 1330, if you have not been receiving e-mails. (You need to give her your e-mail address.)

We still need sponsors for our Web site. We are drafting an agreement for sponsors in order to get funding. We set a deadline of October 1 for Toby and Kent Hayes to have it completed. Once this has been completed, willing sponsors will have what’s required from us.

David Potter from BJC (also our District 8 ASHE Representative) spoke to the group about ASHE, his role and the benefits of membership. David has a personal goal to increase ASHE membership. Currently, there are 20,000 potential members and only 6,000 of those are members. ASHE is looking at an associate membership to reduce the cost to join (which often is the issue) and also improving its Web page (ASHE.NET) to be current and more informative regarding changes and requirements, i.e. JCAHO, NFPA, etc.

ASHE/AHA has also developed a certification program for healthcare facility managers (CHEM).

NOTE: 2 p.m. September 26 David Potter and Don Stevens will have their picture taken with Governor Mel Carnahan to promote "Health Care Facilities Management Week" October 22-28, 2000.

Ben Schwarz, Ph.D., spoke to the group about design for the elderly. His discussion was very interesting and informative. He covered the following four basic topics.

  1. Visual Acuity C light levels, glare, shiny floors and walls, pools of light, contrast of lighting and also the colors green, blue and yellow

  2. Enhanced Healing C echo, hard surfaces, not enough soft surfaces

  3. Improved Cognitive Ability C way finding, lines on floor, access to daylight, nature

  4. Mobility C levers vs. knobs, handrails (flat vs. round), adjustable height for sinks and toilets, carpet vs. hard surfaces and things to do to reduce falls

The group enjoyed lunch at the Flat Branch Restaurant and a tour of the MicroBrewery.

The meeting adjourned at 2 p.m.
