MSHFM Board Meeting
May 17, 2001

Columbia Regional Hospital

Attendees:

Robert Hintz  Peg Johnston
Mike L. Bock      Bill Oswald
Jon Johnson Chris Lohmann
Tobias Gilk Kent Hayes
Doug Ruble Michael R. Epley
Susan Brandt  Corey Smith
Cory Unterseher Paul Guptill

MSHFM President Robert Hintz called the meeting to order at 10 a.m.

Treasurer’s Report – total assets as of March 31, 2001, were $9,648.53.  Ernst & Young performed an audit for MSHFM at no cost to us.  Everything was found to be in order.

The next meeting will be August 16.  Dave Potter will be the afternoon speaker.  Dave is retiring and this will be a good time to wish him well and thank him for all he has done for the organization.  Dave served on the ASHE board until December 31, 2000.

We still need a location for the August meeting.  Susan Brandt will see if we can have it at Boone Hospital Center.

The November meeting at Tan-Tar-A will feature Dan Eckles, Department of Health, hospital licensing department.  Dan also will be retiring.  We are hoping that we may get to meet his replacement at this time.  We still need a humorous speaker for this meeting.  If anyone has an idea, please let Bob Hintz know.

The group discussed our chapter’s first annual trade show and conference to be held in Columbia.  It was decided to proceed with planning for May 2002.  Doug Ruble, president-elect, will be contacting a consultant to help with planning the event.

The group discussed topics for 2002 meetings.  Some of the ideas are:

  • I.A.Q.
  • energy conservation
  • safety codes
  • Dan Eckles (replacement)

The group was encouraged to use our Web site for networking.  It is a great resource.  However, it is not utilized as much as we would like for it to be.

Attendance was discussed (or the lack of).  We have approximately 100 members and only have 20-25 attending at any given meeting.  Several ideas were mentioned as to why we don’t see better turnout.  They are:

  • length of meeting
  • time of day
  • day of week
  • topics (not for all facility areas)
  • no outreach to new peers/replacements

Maybe we need to have a golf outing??

Tobias Gilk will be working on phase II of our Web site upgrade (mainly cosmetic).  Please review the information that is posted (phone, fax, title, etc.) and let Toby know if any changes are needed.

The business meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.

Morning Speaker:  Mike Andrews, Johnson Controls

Mr. Andrews covered several ideas for cost reduction, capital planning, benchmarking and customer/staff satisfaction.  One key point of the presentation was that you must have sound supportive documentation of savings to receive capital dollars.  Must also be able to sell it to administration.

Afternoon Speaker:  Scott Phillips, Hilti Firestop Systems

Mr. Phillips discussed the importance of proper installation of any and all firestop systems.  Some recommendations that came from Scott’s presentation are:

  • use only one manufacturer’s product in your facility (easier to verify proper installation)
  • use a professional installer
  • have policy/permit program in place for all staff/contractors that work above ceiling
  • system is either 100 percent right or 100 percent wrong – no in between

Here are a couple of firestop contractors that serve all of Missouri.
